So as I’m sure everyone’s read by now, I watched Titanic today, the first time I’ve seen it since I was 6 when I watched it in the theater.
Which means this time I’m much more aware of what it all means, and how strong the bond was between Jack and Rose. Athe end, when she throws the sapphire diamond necklace into the ocean I was thinking why would you do that? But I think I figured it out.
Yeah, the diamond had a ton of value, but to Rose it was priceless and almost like a weight, Cal gave it to her, not because he loved her but to claim her. She said how Jack only existed in her memory, that she didn’t even have his picture. I think she held onto it for those 85 years because he drew her wearing the necklace, it was the only physical thing she had that she could connect to Jack and her love for him. She held onto it for Jack never letting it go. Before Jack died he told her to “Never let go.” And when she realizes he is dead she whispers “I’ll never let go Jack.” I think that “Never let go” held so many words that were too hard to say at the time, so then she releases his hand and he sinks. I thought her holding onto it, and then finally releasing it once people knew their story; represented Rose keeping that promise, she held onto their love forever, she never let go of him, and after telling their story she knew that their love would go on, even after they were gone. So I think her dropping the necklace into the ocean meant that she was finally letting go, because she kept her promise to Jack always. When she let it go, I figured it to mean that she was not only setting Jack free by finally letting him rest in peace, but she found peace too, and the necklace was a heart, by her dropping it where the Titanic wreckage happened 85 years ago I think she was literally giving Jack her heart, and letting go because she was going to die, and I think that above all else was a symbol of their love. And I think it’s one of the most touching scenes I’ve ever seen.
Then at the end where she passes away, there is a scene of Jack waiting for Rose, and I think that meant that to her even though he was gone, he waited for her forever and also never let go, and when she died, she got to see him again, and finally everyone was happy for them.
Okay, I’m done writing about this because I’m going to start crying all over again. But anyways, such a beautiful movie, and it is definitely one of my forever favorites now.
